Alphabetically by state:

Here is a beautiful real photo stereo view of "A Nation's Shrine from the
Air - Home of Washington, Founder of the Republic, Mt. Vernon,
Va.". A marvelous historical narrative on the back gives
many interesting facts such as that from here Washington carried on his most
interesting correspondence with Hamilton on the subject of federal union, and
here too that he wrote many letters on another subject dear to his heart - the
opening up of the vast, unknown West. We wish there was time and space to
copy all of the facts on the back. George Washington and his wife, Martha,
are buried here, a few hundred yards from the house. A real piece of
historical Americana, this is. We recently received a letter soliciting
funds for restoration of Mt. Vernon - no Government funds, either from the U.S.
Government, or the State of Virginia.

Military & War Views:
U&U "Rest in Peace! your sacrifice made Cuba free - burial of
"Maine" Heroes, Arlington, Va. Copyright 1900 by J.F.
Jarvis. What looks like a dark band across the view is, in actuality, a
crowd of people assembled for the burial. Nice old historic view, whether
you collect military, Virginia, or Cuba related material.
A group of soldiers pictured in this stereo. It is titled "Lining up
for Drill". There is a copyright date of 1898, by William H. Rau,
which gives one the idea that these are men in the Army during the Spanish
American war.
Keystone - V 19282 There is also a number 288 The title
on this very nice view states that this is "Colored Troops Returning from
France on S.S. Aquitania, New York." There is a wonderful historical
narrative telling about the "Afro-American portion of the population .....
well represented in the AEF" .... there is also an excellent description of
the camouflage netting used on ships at the time. This is from World War
I.
Keystone - Hauling Down French Dirigible Balloon for Officer's Report is the
title on this very nice condition view. The historic narrative on the back
talks about the fact that "Dirigibles performed most important services
during the war, particularly in scouting, protecting ships from submarine
attack, searching out U boats, and making observations for the arm. They
were used over land and sea". We are uncertain which war, but we
think WWI, as they talk about horses being attached to the winch to lower the
airship. 2/10
VA: We wish we could lighten this scan. The view is not this dark
when seen in person. It is Keystone 99, title "General View of
Norfolk Navy Yard, Portsmouth, Va. It seems to have been taken from a
rooftop overlooking the scene, the image is clear and the 3-D effect
super. On the back is an excellent historical narrative. One fact
impresses us: "Inside this structure (the large bldg visible) are
built and repaired some of Uncle Sam's battleships. Knowing this and
remembering that the capital of our country, Washington, D.C. is not far way on
the Potomac River, you are not surprised that the entrance to Chesapeake Bay is
well protected by Fortress Monroe and other defenses." Perhaps this
is the 1930's? No date is seen. We have not had this view before.
Niagara Falls Views
267. Night - A beautiful night scene with moonlight reflected in the
water. This view was done by G.E. Curtis, the well known photographer.
Geo. Barker, Photographer up the left; Niagara Falls, New York, up the
right. This is #712 - The Hermit's Cascade - Niagara.
Here is an absolutely lovely stereo view in excellent condition. Done on a
light blue-green mount, the title is "View from Prospect Park -
Niagara". The photographer's imprint at either end reads:
Charles Bierstadt, Photographer, Niagara Falls, N.Y.
Niagara Falls as photographed by George Barker.
Holiday
In this U&U stereo, a couple sits in front of a fireplace, dreaming of a
future Christmas. Three ghost images of children seen in front of a ghost
image Christmas tree; three ghost stockings on the mantle. The actual
title of this card (11) is ANTICIPATION - Visions of the future. It
has a copyright date of 1901. $6
Children:
Keystone 151 In this wonderful old stereoview we see, according to the
title "Traffic Policeman Helping Children to Cross the
Street". The back is titled TRAFFIC POLICEMAN, CLEVELAND,
OHIO". Historical narrative on back tells all about how to become a
policeman (nope, not for girls). It says you must learn all the laws ...
"some of these laws tell you how to drive horses and
automobiles" According to the wonderful old cars this was early
1900s. The back says this is P151. A great street scene, with
vintage vehicles. $10
11490
Parental Discipline - that is the title at lower right of this adorable stereo
done by James M. Davis in 1897, and copyright by B. W. Kilburn, of Littleton,
N.H.. The little boy dressed up as the father holds one doll child next to
a carriage (left) and sitting in front of the table, the little girl is spanking
another doll. Just behind the "father" is a crib or cradle.
Photographic image is clear. What appears to be a portrait of Abraham
Lincoln is on the wall. $10
U&U: Titled "Good Night" and copyright 1901. A
sentimental view, picturing four lovely little girls, on their way upstairs to
bed. $3
P12 from Keystone, also numbered P-21330., titled "Playing
Indians". Five children in costume with bow. From the back,
starting off "Five little Indians sitting in a row", the narrative
goes on to tell about the fact that this country used to belong to the Indians,
and there is some history of them written at a level for youngsters. Super
condition, the red at the bottom is simply reflection from the scanner, and is
not part of the view itself.
Copyright 1891, by Strohmeyer & Wyman. This is an exceptional
condition view, showing a little girl and her dog. The dog is dressed in a
doll dress or a baby dress and has a cap on its head; the little girl holds a
piece of bread or cookie. The title is "Speak for it
Beauty". Too much detail to describe here, many interesting items in
room and on mantel.
A flat stereoview by William H. Rau, Photography, Phila (Sold only by Griffith
& Griffith, etc.). No date on this but we know it is fairly
early. "Teaching Kitty to take the Bottle" is the title.
Good depth, 3-D effect. The little one has a nipple in mouth, as the
larger little girl puts a nipple in the kitten's mouth. Good subject,
again clarity rules here.
Native Americans:
Keystone #265 and/or 16061: Iroquois Indians who Took Part in Tercentary
Pageant (1908), Quebec, Canada. A fair number of persons dressed in
traditional garb, with bows and arrows, and mostly sitting or lying on the
ground in front of a very large tepee. The historical narrative on the
back describes the Iroquois, the league of Five Nations and then tells of the
Tuscaroras in NC making it Six Nations. Interesting and sympathetic
story. ebay 2/3
Home Duties of the Hopi Man - a scene at the Indian Village of Oraibi,
Arizona. Copyright 1903 by Underwood & Underwood. This view is
ex-Commercial Museum High School of Commerce, Boston, Mass - there is a small
white square on the back at upper right "4 Wool". We think this
is very nice condition, indeed it looks better in person than in the scan.
$20
The Katchina Dance to the Rain Gods, Hopi Indians, at the Shonghopavi Pueblo,
Arizona. This wonderful Keystone view, Number 62, does not scan well,
which is a pity. It is in terrific condition, pictures the pueblo, the
dancers and some other Hopi people. There is good depth, and stereo
effect. On the back is an excellent historic narrative describing
"their most famous and interesting ceremony ... grotesque garb .... hideous
masks, etc." It goes on to describe the dance and the village which
"is on a mesa in the midst of the Painted Desert where rain is always
needed". $25
Personalities:
Who can tell us the name of this woman pictured by Sarony? We have had few
stereo views by this maker, a well known photographer. She looks familiar
and we are thinking "actress". Inquire about price and
availability, please.
Occupations:
Hydraulic Mining is the title on this very nice condition stereo view by
Keystone. It is number 268G; from the Geography Units series. This
describes gold mining in the hydraulic fashion. An excellent extensive
narrative on the back. The red across the bottom is reflection from the
scanner light; the view itself is in new condition and totally black and white
photograph. $10
ND: Threshing Wheat in the Red River Valley, North Dak. is the title on
this very clear Keystone view, 177. One can almost hear the steam engines
as the wheat is threshed and blown to the top of those huge piles. A horse
drawn vehicle brings more wheat to the workers. An excellent narrative on
the reverse describes the process and the engine and separator. At the
time of this picture (1930's?), "If the wheat crop of our country for one
year was put in two-bushel sacks, and these sacks were laid in rows, there would
be eight rows clear around the world". We can't help but wonder how
this compares to today's wheat industry? In any case, a great look back at
agriculture in America, early last century.
Fairs & Expositions:
National Parks:
Views other than American in the following section:
Early Keystone stereo view of the new Aswan Dam though they spell it on the
mount Assuan Dam (sometimes written as Aswan Dam). This is from the Geography series; test questions at end
and one reads "How has English rule benefited Egypt?".
The title of this Keystone view is Native Boys Spinning Cotton, Egypt.
This view is alternately numbered 563 and 6233. The narrative on the back
describes the spinning process, and gives some facts about Egyptian
cotton. It also says "You will note that the natives are very
dark. Their clothes look like bathrobes. They wear no shoes.
The question posed at the very end is "To what race do these boys
belong?".
Ex-President Kruger's Home at Pretoria, South Africa. Copyright 1901 by
Underwood & Underwood.
Leopoldville on Stanley Pool, most important trade center of the Congo Free
State. Copyright Underwood & Underwood. We learn from the back
that "If you wish to visit ...... an ocean steamer will carry you up the
broad seven-mile mouth of the Congo to Matadi, then a ride of 240 miles on the
Congo Railway, built in 1898, will bring you to Stanley Pool". A
further description is given of the Phiography; Industries; Transportation,
etc. Extremely interesting.
Manchuria: This 1904 U&U stereo view is titled "West from City
Wall, along curiously decorated street to the Bell Tower Mukden,
Manchuria". There is a wonderful historic narrative on the back that
begins with the fact that "There are at least 300,000 Chinese living here
and probably 25,000 soldiers are in or near the city since the outbreak of the
Russo-Japanese war". It is from Notes of Travel, No. 6, copyrighted
1904, by Underwood & Underwood. We wish we could reproduce all the
history here. Very nice condition.
Iraq: The scanner won't behave today; the pinkish area is
reflection. The actual view is like brand new, beautifully crisp black and
white, real photo. This is Keystone V27702 Where Tradition Locates
Garden of Eden, Valley of Euphrates, Iraq. This is from the early 1900's,
there is no copyright date. The historical narrative on the back begins
with "We are on the right bank of the Euphrates, facing east. Persia
and Afghanistan and northern India lie beyond that distant horizon."
It goes on from there across the geographic facts, climate, religion, etc., and
says that this district was inhabited thousands of years before the beginning of
the Christian era. with ruins dating back as far as 2250 B.C. There is so
much information, it is too bad we can't include it all here. Super view.
The Tower of London is printed up the right side of this view; no maker's
name. What is unusual is that it does not appear to be taken from the
river side. Note the horse drawn coaches in the foreground. Some age
apparent, but a nice old flat mount.
Canada: This Keystone view 291* is titled "A Pulp Mill of the St.
Lawrence Region, Canada". The condition is so nice, and there is a
great description of the river on the back. We guess this was done in the
1930's. The image is crisp and clear, with excellent stereo
effect.
