shows an enormous building with a sign "Opera House" easily seen to
the left of the first flag. We like it in spite of what appears to be a
small punch hole over the heads of the two persons shown walking, because of the
wonderful vintage automobiles. Published by White of Hampton Beach, N.H.,
and mailed from there though we cannot see the date, it is an early card from the
clothing of the persons pictured (ladies in somewhat long, ankle length,
dresses). The card appears hand tinted but it does not state so.

was published by H.G. Zimmerman & Co. of Chicago. Hand colored most
likely, it shows a youngster on a dirt street in front of a picket fence.

L.B. Hollister, Importer & Jobber, lead, S.Dak." and there is a circle
with the Hollister name, a spruce tree and Black Hills, S. D. in it on the back,
we guess a trade mark of sorts. A C.T. American Art Colored card. It
appears to have been hand colored. Marvelous detail showing the miners'
helmets and pails. A sign reads "Remember - Safety First".
What courage a job like that must require. $10
TN: Never mailed, this card is titled "Hose Company No. 2, Bristol,
Tenn." and shows a handsome team of three white horses, hitched to the fire
engine, and we'd guess this is the fire department of that time. Super

International Post Card Co., New York, is no. 224, and made in Germany.
One of our favorites, and from our personal collection. ebay 2/3

"looking Down Into the Gorge at Natural Tunnel, Va."; the last
"Looking Out of Natural Tunnel, Va.".
PR: Souvenir from Puerto Rico, Your $2,000,000 Market is printed in the
center of this very nice old linen postcard. Probably we should have
placed it in the World's Fair category as the back says "In the Puerto Rico
Pavilion at the New York World's Fair, alluring displays picture the commercial
importance of this American stronghold of the Caribbean - an island filled with
scenic beauty and charm, and possessing a climate unsurpassed the year
around." Never mailed, super condition. Early 1960's. M..

A wonderful real photo card picturing a young looking Theodore Roosevelt.
Never mailed, it was printed in Germany, and the caption reads "Prasident
Roosevelt". Quite slender here, compared to what we imagine to be
later portraits. SOLD
Richmond, Va. this pictures a "Human Confederate Flag" as noted upper
left; "And 'twill live in song and story, Though its folds are in the
dust" is printed at right. The back has a great description:
"One of the most pleasing as well as spectacular features of the great
re-union of C.S.A. Veterans, which was held in Richmond in May-June 1907 for the
purpose of participating in the exercises incident to the unveiling of the Jeb
Stuart & Jefferson Davis Monuments, was the arrangement and costuming of 600
school children in the form and colors of a Confederate battle flag. The
children occupied a stand within the Lee Monument enclosure, and aroused the
greatest enthusiasm by their singing "Dixie" and other Southern
Airs". Sent from Brook Mills VA to a NY address in 1912.
Reference to coon hunting in the message. This card was published by the
Southern Bargain House, Richmond, Va., with All Rights Reserved. We have
had only two or three other cards by this maker and they are extremely
popular. $30

be a good accompaniment to your exhibit of commemorative coins. All three
may be had for the price of $3 total, plus mailing (see below, near order form).
Holiday:
A lovely old, embossed Santa card which, in spite of its age, has great appeal.
Mailed from Brooklyn, NY on Dec 22, 1907, and sent to Jamestown, N.Y. We
don't know why there is tape in places on the back as there seems no reason for;
slightly overlaps at top. $15
A nice old card , embossed, from the "Washington Birthday Series No.
2". Some age apparent (note corners) but overall quite
acceptable. Flags, shields, cherries, and Washington giving his horse
sugar on a gilt ax blade back ... title "Washington - his
kindness". ebay 2/4
An embossed postcard (figure) of a female drummer dressed Continental style, on
a gilt background. Decoration Day Greetings. Mailed from Lebanon N.J.
to a Miss Lena Pace of Rt. 2, Califon, New Jersey, it is in quite nice

CA: This card was sent Air Mail in Oct. of 1962. It is addressed to
Brother J. Stephen, c/o Christian Brothers High School in Memphis, TN. We
acquired a few of the cards from his collection some years ago, and this may be
the first we have offered for sale. Interesting message on back reads, in
part, ...am out here with the Minn. Vikings; Having a good time; Players are all
swell guys; Vince and Mary Doyle met me at the airport. The card
shows Los Angeles California Coliseum at Exposition Park. SOLD
Personalities:
This postcard was published by L.E. Smith, Wholesale Distributor, Gettysburg,
Pas. It is a Lusterchrome made only by Tichnor Bros. Inc., of Boston 15,
Mass. The postal zone after Boston tells us this was most likely the early
1950's. Also from the back we learn that this depicts "A Painting of
General Dwight D. Eisenhower, with a background portraying the struggle for
liberty of the freedom loving Hungarian and American people." It
further tells that the painting is on display at the Famous Hall of Presidents,
Gettysburg, Pa. It was painted by Stephen Juharos. Like new
condition, never mailed.
This postcard pictures a very young "President Jimmy Carter 39th.
President, United Staes". This is a card which was Published by
Coral-Lee and is autographed on the back by her. It says "Coralie D.
Sparre, publisher of the "Coral-Lee" political postcards. (and is
signed) Coral-Lee". $3

World's Fairs & Expositions:
This has us slightly baffled. The card is titled
"Friendship". At lower left (and underlined by writer of card)
it says "Printed by the Blind at the C.P.I.". Then the written
message says "Bought at the blind table at the fete - May 4".
The other side tells us that the is a Private Mailing Card - it was mailed to
Madame Bak....tiff; Legation of Russia, Tokyo-Japan. Quite something that
it has survived! We don't remember where we got it but we have had it for
about thirty years.
Alaska-Yukon-Pacific
Exposition. This postcard pictures the Oriental Palace and Entrance to the
Agricultural Building. Lowman & Hanford Co. Publ. Seattle (in small
letters lower left, front). This card was never mailed. Sl age
apparent. Hand written date of June 17-23 1909 at upper right. ebay

New York World's Fair - in this real photo card, by Underwood & Underwood,
people are viewing The Perisphere. Like new condition, see back as
well. $10
One of our favorite cards in our collection. This real photo card was
taken, apparently at the 1809-1909 Centennial, Gaines N.Y. (it is printed just
above the message on the back). This is first of all, a Women's Christian
Temperance Union item, or W.C.T.U. as seen on the booth they had at the
Fair. At right see the sign for CHECKING and the other for ICE
CREAM. Another sign, just to the right of the center, tells that
"Souvenirs sold here 10 cts.". Two others, a bit hard to
read: one to the immediate left of the WCTU sign says something about
Respect, Religion, and we think it says Why Leave the Saloon. At the far
left: this sign starts of with Men, then Money and we can't quite read the
rest. Flags and bunting abound. There is a ghost image at left, to
the right of the tree trunk. On turning it over, we find it was mailed
from Albion, N.Y. in 1909, to R.D. Holly, N.Y. The message tells about the
printing, the medal contest, and "now I think you can plan for a Gold Medal
contest"; Edith Zimmerman took the prize, ... next meeting thank
offering", etc. Apparently the writer was so well known to the
recipient it was not felt necessary to sign the card. This card has so
much going for it, you may find more in it than we did.
Transportation & Travel:
A nice old linen card, pictures the Union Depot, in Phoenix, Arizona. ebay
.
S.S. United States - this is a beautiful card done by Steelograph Co., of One
Broadway, NYC. The material almost looks like canvas making this resemble
a painting. Gives the statistics as follows: Length 900 ft., Gr Tons
51,000 - Largest, most luxurious ship ever built in America - the world's
fastest liner, she established new trans-atlantic speed records eastbound and
westbound on her maiden voyage. This flagship of the United States Lines
operates in regular service between East Coast ports of the U.S.A. and
Europe. The S.S. United States also makes occasional Winter and Spring
cruises. Like new condition except for a pencil price from old. ebay

Advertising Cards:
NYC: This is a card that could be collected for various reasons: it
advertises Janssen's Restaurant; it pictures a Christmas tree; it is of a place
that probably no longer exists in New York City, so if you collect NYC history,
then here you go. $5
This is an advertising postal, in like new condition. It pictures Santa and jewelry
on the front. It especially tells you that "Christmas Time is Bulova
Watch Time!" and several watches are pictured. It was to have been
sent by H. Roy Martin, Jeweler, Mayodan, N.C. but this one was not mailed to
anyone. A super card in great condition. SOLD
Here is a wonderful old sepia tone card. The front shows a little boy
fishing with a bamboo pole. The flex at lower left scarcely shows.
The back has a marvelous advertisement for the Auburn Post Card Mfg. Co., Inc.,
Auburn, Ind. It tells you this is a Sepia Local View Post Card. You
could order 500 of one view for $4 or 1000 for $5. From our personal
collection of advertising cards. Only one we've seen. $10
We just love this advertising postcard, in spite of the flex lower rt
corner. The front shows William Penn Statue on City Hall Tower,
Philadelphia. To the right of the statue, printed in red, "The hand
of the great Founder points toward the home of the ENTERPRISE Meat and
Food Chopper." This card was issued by Klopp & Kalbach, of
Robesonia, Pa. shown in red at the bottom of the card. If you cannot read
the marvelous advertising for the food chopper, email and we will reproduce it
for you.
NJ: Here is a nice old card made by the Scheller Co., Hackettstown,
N.J. It pictures the Ryland Inn located on U.S. Route 22, in Whitehouse,
New Jersey. Dated Sept. 22/62, in pencil, it was not addressed, nor
mailed. It goes on to tell that this is "A charming old home built
before 1800. Once a stage coach stop and now one of New Jersey's finest
country restaurants. Open every day for lunch and dinner. Telephone
Whitehouse 534-2611." Nice overall condition. $4
A postcard which is titled "Tomorrow's Heritage" and poses the
question: What of the children of our immigrant population. It
goes on quite interestingly from there. Just after the world war, this was
a project of the Board of Home Missions and Church Extension of the Methodist
Episcopal Church at 1701 Arch Street, Philadelphia. Nice condition, never
mailed. - One item caught my eye: "....the children must have the
very best of church and Sunday school instruction in English, with constant
emphasis upon the fact that they are not only with us, but of us."
The point made also in the text was so that they no longer be considered
"foreigners". Were we smarter 50 plus years ago?
The Louis XVI Candy Shop, Hotel Sinton, Cincinnati, Ohio. Never mailed and
near new. By the Kropp Co., Milwaukee.
Here is one of our favorite cards, from our collection of advertising. The
front tells that "The McConnon man is coming". and is canceled at
Allentown, PA in 1939. The other side is signed by D. Banks Stouffer, the
dealer who sent the card. This company sold Flavoring Extracts, and Ground
Spices, make-up called then "Toilet Helps"; Home Medicines, Household
Necessities (from baking powder to razor blades), and whatever might be needed
for Stock and Poultry Preparations. Fascinating range of
products.
An interesting card advertising a hat company. Beneath the view of Morro
Castle Havana is printed, in script, "Got through rainy season O.K. thanks
to quinine and a Mallory Crenette hat. Jack. P.S. That's me. I
did it with my little pen." An arrow goes from the P.S. to the man
with the hat. At left reads Frey & Forker, Norristown Dealers - we are
guessing a PA merchant? In any case, we liked it many years ago, and this
comes from our personal collection.
A postcard advertising the company Numismatists Online. These guys were
ahead of their time. We sold through their service, very successfully, and
hated it when they went away. It seems as though they were bought out and
then sort of faded away. Sure wish there was a similar service today.

We love this old black and white card. Now that we are approaching the
holiday shopping season, who remembers shopping at this wonderful store?
There is no title on the front of this never mailed card. The back says
that "B. Altman & Co. invites you to visit its seven attractive floors
and stop in at our Charleston Garden (shown on reverse) for luncheon or
tea. At the bottom on the message side it also reads: "Fifth
Avenue at 34th. Street, New York. Suburban Shops at East Orange, N.J. and
White Plains, N.Y.".
Gaar-Scott Gas Tractor Plowing with Ten 14" Moldboard Bottoms is the title
on the front of this sepia tone card. From the back: If you want to know
about this biggest, strongest and best of Gas Tractors, write us at the sign of
the TIGER. There is, as seen, a place for a one-cent stamp which helps
date it. Not pristine; however, the only one we have ever
seen.
this is one of our favorite real photo cards. It advertises the Bandanna
Tea Room at 92 Haywood St. Open Week Days 8 AM to 10 PM; Sundays 5 PM to
10 PM. A black "mammy" in the doorway w/a doll on a chair, at
the front of this log cabin. The sign reads Southern Days Plantation
Dinners Served 1-3 $1.00; some kind of Supper 50 cents; all foods made to
order. White sign in window reads: Ice Cream, Sweet Milk, Buttermilk
- rest too light to read. In great condition. Someone has written in
very nice penmanship, on the back, "Best food in Asheville served
here! Home cooking, delicious coffee, hot breads, fried chicken,
etc. Breakfast, Luncheon, Dinner and Supper served to order. From
our personal collection of North Carolina and Advertising cards. $10

on street says late fifties or early sixties. ebay 2/3
GA: The title of this card reads "Street Scene, Chauncey,
Ga.". It seems to have been printed from a photo. It may be

"Hotel DeLeslie". Shows signs of age, and was mailed from
Chauncey to "Princess Anne, Route #2, Md.".
NC: Bank, Post Office and Cupola House, Edenton, N.C. This card was
mailed in 1920, to Greensboro, N.C. Published by Mitchener's Pharmacy,
Edenton, N.C. and Made in U.S.A. Age apparent, sl crease, but the only one
of these we have had.
First National Bank Building Charlotte, N.C.
FL: First National Bank Building, Miami, Florida is the title on this card
mailed 1962. The back tells us it is "Looking North on Biscayne

condition.
GA: According to the back of this postcard, mailed in 1971, this pictures
"The beautiful and exciting new branch of the Citizens and Southern

and most dramatic branch shows the Heliport on its roof and the distinctive
Commerce Club on its top floor". Nice condition for age, sl flex
lower lt corner; cryptic message on back "can you see the man on the 13th.
floor? he is opening a safe".
NC: The back of this very nice condition old Curteicholor chrome card
tells us that this is "Wachovia Bank & Trust Co. Bldg. and the home
office Bldg. of R.J. Reynolds Industries, located in downtown Winston-Salem,
N.C. (the RJR is the smaller building at left and was a prototype for the Empire
State Building). Today, the Wachovia Bank no longer has its headquarters
here, in this building, and we believe the name of this building has been
changed from Wachovia to Winston Towers. This came about after the merger
with First Union, and it is no longer the tallest building in downtown
Winston-Salem.
ND: This is a terrific card showing Broadway, North from N.P. Ave., Fargo,
N.D. There is a sign for Anna Held Cigar - Better Than Moth Others; the
Orpheum Theatre "A First Class Theatre" two complete changes weekly;
and at right, for those bank collectors you can see the sign telling that this
building is the Merchants' National Bank.* Many other street signs may be
read on both sides of the street, too numerous to tell about here. Street
car tracks, people both sides of street. *Chartered in April 1906 Ch
#8170, issued large only; placed in voluntary liquidation July 26 1929;
succeeded by Charter # 13323, The Merchants National Bank & Trust Co., of
Fargo, which issued small size currency. $5
SC: Main Street, Looking West, Laurens, S.C. is the title on this old
card, which most likely dates from the teens, as per the old car next door to
the Bank of Laurens. It was mailed from there to Decatur, Georgia but we
cannot quite read the date of the cancel. A Commercialchrome card.
Sl Flex mid-center bottom; overall quite nice condition.
SC: First National Bank Building, Myrtle Beach, S.C. is what we find on
the back of this chrome card, no zip code; most likely from the early 1950's
because of what appears to be an old Ford station wagon in the parking lot at
right. From a Transparency by Fred Stanley; Pub. by Plyler Sale Co.,
Myrtle Beach, S.C.
SC: The Edisto National Bank, Orangeburg, S.C. is the title on the front
of this old card which was mailed from Cope, SC in 1919. It was sent from
an RFD address to Cleveland TN to a nursery there, requesting a catalog.
Our interest, of course, is the bank pictured on the front.

Here is a comic card, perhaps typical for the time, and titled "One of the
Good Things Grown in California". We think this is the only black
humor card we have had from that state, in that they were usually done in the
South. This is early, for the genre, with a copyright date of 1907; done
by Edward Mitchell, San Francisco, CA. Sunflowers at side, a
"mammy" eating watermelon, which was a common theme. Never
mailed. Near new condition. ebay 1/8
Scanned in its holder, the title on this old card is "A little light on a
dark subject". From the "Quaint Kids" series, printed in
England and mailed from there to a British address. A 1913 cancel from
Sheffield, half penny green stamp. SOLD
A real photo postcard, sepia tone with a title across the bottom "Seminole
Indian Baby Show". Never mailed, in nice condition. EKC in

colorful skirts, along the side of the road in the Florida keys.
FOLDERS:
A postcard folder of Winston-Salem, NC with fourteen views of the locale.

Official View Book - A Century of Progress Exposition, Chicago 1933.
Twenty wonderful views inside this folder, of that grand event. Never

OUT OF THE COUNTRY:
Here is a lovely card, no maker's name, simply Carte Postale on the back. It
pictures a Japanese fisherman on the beach. The title is The Bund of Mogi,
Nagasaki (one of the bombs was dropped here at the close of WWII.) and there are
characters at lower right. Nice overall condition. Never
mailed. ebay 1/8
This is a very interesting card. The title on the front reads "No. 57
Chinese Buying Food at Market in Shanghai." and from the detail it was made
from a photo; has been hand colored. Turning the card over one
finds it was made by The Akasawa Fine Art Company of Yokohama Hapan and there
are what appear to be Japanese characters near the postmark. Stamp has
been removed or lost. It was mailed from Seattle, Wash. in Oct. of 1908 to
Laramie Wyoming. It was perhaps an exchange of cards between collectors as
the message reads, in part: Your postal cards have come, perhaps you would
like one in return from "The Flower Land". Now why is a Japanese
company making a Chinese scene and how did it come to be mailed here was our
question; closer exam shows it was mailed from the World's Fair most likely the
Japanese booth as there is a faint cancel w/characters.
INDIA Here is an interesting sepia card. The title at lower left,
front tells us this is "Parsee Statue, Byculla, Bombay". Never
mailed. The back says this is No. 94; Thacker & Co. Ltd. Copyright;
Manufactured in Great Britain. Very nice condition. We guess 1920's
or 1930's.
INDIA: Another nice old sepia card. The title on this, at lower
left, is "Yacht Club Chambers, Bombay.
A Seaside Residence, Barbados This is the title on this black
and white postcard. It was done by W.L. Johnson & Co. Ltd.
Barbados No. 31 Nice condition, never mailed.
Titled "Cuautla: Chozos de Indigenos." this Mexican card appears
to be hand colored. Never sent, but very early 1900's from the
style. Buy this one and the next one for one price - see next card.
"Tuzamapam: Laguna" is the title on this card which was never
mailed and appears, from the style, to have been made in the early 1900's.
Both old Mexican cards can be had for a total of $3 plus postage.
Here is a lovely blue and white postcard mailed in 1921. The title on the
front is in English and oriental characters: Scenery At the Kogosan,
Chosen Close Sight in the Kongo Sea. A pen notation at lower right says
"A Merry Christmas"; oriental stamp at lower left; back shows it was
mailed Dec. 24 1921 from Trenton, N.J. to a Darby, Pa. address - what a
puzzle? Nice condition, very attractive. Back is titled Post Carde
and has oriental characters at right near edge, on address side.
MEXICO Here is a great real photo card - Escuela Nacional De Bellas Artes
lower right corner. Very nice condition, near new, never mailed. The
back as a great advertisement which invites one to Enjoy Mexico as Your Own
Home; Modern House for Tourists, Open All Year, etc. Sounds quite
nice. Don't know when this was made but the idea of Rooms $1.50 American
Money should give a clue. This included breakfast, per person, per
day. Adolfo C. Tornelli was the manager and there is a good map to

Haifa, Landing Place is the title on this black and white card, from The Cairo
Postcard Trust, Cairo. Sent March 7, 1924, and describes having seen
"several caravans of at least 24 camels with their drivers, a beautiful
palm grove, almond trees in full bloom and was way up on Mount Carmel to enjoy
the superb view". Super condition. $5
What appears to be, on the front, a hand colored view and the title reads
"Souvenir of Hongkong. From the back we see that it was mailed from
there to a midshipman aboard the U.S.S. Montana, in 1909. There is a
slight paper overlay on the back, as seen below and slightly on, the
stamp. We feel it does not significantly impact, and might be removed with
a damp q-tip; however, we tend to leave things "as found".
Attractive and unusual find these days.
A Panama postcard with a ship cancel, the U.S.S. Lexington. Sent to
someone in Greenville, S.C. using a red two cent stamp. $2
This postcard of Havana - Morro Castle was sent in 1957 from Habana on May
16. See the three cent stamp, Cuban? The publisher of this card was
Mario L. Guardiola, Obrapia 511, Havana. Obviously from a scrapbook.
Condition as seen. Good if you are interested in Cuban history.
Interestingly, the message reads that the sender flew "from Key West -
Simply thrilling. Extremely modern bldgs, gorgeous gardens and flowers
& horrifying poverty. Prices would make you drool, jewelry and shoes
.....! Will sight see tomorrow, fly back in aft. and head for
Miami". But wait, Castro was to have fixed all that, right? How
is Cuba different today?
Remains of City Wall, Havana, Cuba is the title on the front of this nice old
linen postcard. The back shows that it was mailed from Habana in July of
1938; interesting cancel tells of an historic event of 1933, hard to read; Cuban
stamp 1cent. Says this wall was built to protect the early settlers from
overland raids; had to be removed for expansion later on.
