antlynch.jpg (92986 bytes)  74th. Congress, 1st. Session - Senate - Report No. 340.  The title of this is "Anti-lynching".  March 1935.  In the last paragraph, on the eleventh page, which is the final page:  "It is the opinion of the committee that the proposed legislation is "appropriate legislation" to discourage and prevent the evil of lynching wherever in the United States that evil exists or is or may be committed.  It is the belief of the committee that the proposed measure does not propose an invasion or subversion of the rights of States.  On the contrar, the measure is an aid to the several States in assuring to their citizens the equal protection of the laws, both State and Federal, to which all citizens are entitled.".  Very nice condition, totally original historic pamphlet.  $20

docala.jpg (105995 bytes)  Two pages from February 5, 1836, of the 24th. Congress, 1st. McClung was Speaker of the House of Representatives, Sam. B. Moore, President of the Senate; marked Approved:  January 9, 1836.  C.C. Clay  $25

docflcst.jpg (81212 bytes)  A report from the "30th. Congress, 2nd Session and dated in February 1849.  A Report of the Secretary of the Treasury, Communicating A report from the Superintendent of the Coast Survey, in relation to the survey of the coast of Florida." Further down it includes the keys and reefs.  There are 14 pages, and the last page includes a letter from Lieutenant James S. Biddle, United States Navy, about "an accurate survey of the reef will develope an excellent channel for vessels of small draft of water from Cape Florida to Key West.  This channel if well marked by buoys, beacons, and light-houses, would divert nearly all of our coasting vessels from the circuitous route over the Bahama banks, and induce them to pass down our own shores inside of the gulf stream."  It goes on to speak of shortening "the passages of vessels bound to the west coast of Florida, Mobile and New Orleans". Original Executive Document.  ebay soon

rh.jpg (149482 bytes)  The Scott Stamp & Coin Co., Ltd.  This is a very large advertising pamphlet (4 pp), for Scott's Stamp Albums, with sample pages, for Great Britain and the United States. This is rubber stamped by Raynor Hubbell Stamp Co., with his address in Buffalo, N.Y., several times - he handed them out, apparently.  Decent overall condition.  Later in life, Mr. Hubbell moved to Griffin, Ga., and specialized in Confederate stamps and covers.  He was very well known in philatelic circles.  Departed this life several decades ago.

docslave.jpg (113923 bytes)  Here is a discourse on "Aggressions of the Slave Power.  Speech of Hon. Henry Wilson, of Massachusetts, in Reply to Hon. Jefferson Davis, Delivered in the Senate, January 26, 1860".  On the last page, Page 8, he poses the question "I should like to know whether the Democratic Senators and Representatives from the North will rise in their places here, and say that, in the event of the elections in November next to the Presidency of the Senator from New York, (Mr. Seward) or the Senator from Maine (Mr. Fessenden) or any other of the Senators about me, or any of the public men who are the accepted leaders of the Republican party, the administration will not be permitted to come into power, and the Union be dissolved?"  There is enormous concern expressed over whether they will "stay here and old on to the Capitol, to engage in a bloody struggle"..... it is quite something to read.  Many states are mentioned including Virginia, South Carolina, Arkansas, Missouri, North Carolina, Massachusetts, etc. ebay soon

bknan.jpg (79537 bytes) bknanb.jpg (98933 bytes) Old Nantasket by Dr. William M. Bergan.  Wonderfully illustrated, this revised edition of 1972, (original we believe was 1968), is soft bound and came from The Christopher Publishing House, North Quincy, Massachusetts.  Near new condition, though we confess to having read it.  Taken from a review in the South Shore Mirror:  This "never before told" story will fascinate young and old readers alike.  It includes all there is to be said about Hull and Nantasket from the 1890's to the present.  This takes in the "Big Hotel" era, Paragon Park as the East Coast's miniature world's fair, and famous personalities from every walk of life."  We loved it.

bkpcrr.jpg (96274 bytes) bkpcrrb.jpg (133019 bytes) October 1969 Penn Central Post - News for America's Leading Railroad Family.  Once again, we placed this on the historic page because the railroad played such a significant part in this country's development.  We like this one as it shows a woman ! and the title of this picture on the front is "Lady in the Yard" and it refers the reader to page five.  Page one is titled COAL BOOM, What Does it Mean to You? and shows miners, trains, and Congressman John P. Saylor of Johnstown, Pa. underground in new Lancashire No. 20 mine, along with Walter J. Hickel, U.S. Secretary of the Interior.  There are eleven pages in this issue, you note the back page is discolored, we are uncertain why it darkened, age or exposure is one guess.  Only the inside of the back page is slightly affected.  On that page is a steam engine and "diesels were also used" as part of the story.  So much for the railroad buff in here.  $2.50 plus postage.

bkschlpa.jpg (77086 bytes) MR. ANDREWS' SCHOOL 1837-1842 Ellen Swartzlander  This is a First Edition Copyright 1958 by the Bucks County Historical Society.  It is in new condition.  The Preface says, in part:  The Journal of the Reverend Silas Andrews' Select Grammar School is from the archives of the Bucks Co. Historical Society.  The original spelling, capitalization and abbreviations have been retained.  Editorial interpolations are placed in brackets.  As a teacher I am convinced that this contemporary record of a small private school if its period is of value.  As a life-long resident of the neighborhood that once resounded with the "vociferations" of Mr. Andrews' boys, I have a deep affection for the Journal and the old Doylestown revealed in its pages.  E.S. at Doylestown, October 25, 1957.    Our note:  as North Carolinians we liked the picture of the original broadside that advertised the "famous Siamese Twins (that) are now exhibiting at the Temperance House" as Chang and Eng lived out from Mt. Airy, just up the road a piece from here.  This is a delightful book, we kind of hate to see it go, but are trying to convince ourselves that we can't keep everything.  A marvelous look back at a more innocent time.

Covington, Jr.  UNC Press 1988.  298 pp.  Near new condition.  If you grew up in the South, this book needs no explanation.  Be that as it may, we copy a paragraph from the dust jacket:  "(no enterprise) has shaped the retail economy of the Carolinas and the Southeast as has the Belk network of department stores.  From the day in 1888 when William Henry Belk advertised cash sales and low prices to the opening, in the 1980's, of world-class stores that match New York's best, the Belk stores have served the people of this region, never losing sight of the fundamental commitment that Belk and his partners made to their communities."  Written for the centennial of the company, this book has wonderful illustrations, from the cover and on through, of the old days up to present.  We were delighted with it.  SOLD
