Here is a discourse on "Aggressions of the Slave Power. Speech of
Hon. Henry Wilson, of Massachusetts, in Reply to Hon. Jefferson Davis, Delivered
in the Senate, January 26, 1860". On the last page, Page 8, he poses
the question "I should like to know whether the Democratic Senators and
Representatives from the North will rise in their places here, and say that, in
the event of the elections in November next to the Presidency of the Senator
from New York, (Mr. Seward) or the Senator from Maine (Mr. Fessenden) or any
other of the Senators about me, or any of the public men who are the accepted
leaders of the Republican party, the administration will not be permitted to
come into power, and the Union be dissolved?" There is enormous
concern expressed over whether they will "stay here and old on to the
Capitol, to engage in a bloody struggle"..... it is quite something to
read. Many states are mentioned including Virginia, South Carolina,
Arkansas, Missouri, North Carolina, Massachusetts, etc. $20 ppd
Old Nantasket by Dr. William M. Bergan. Wonderfully illustrated, this
revised edition of 1972, (original we believe was 1968), is soft bound and came
from The Christopher Publishing House, North Quincy, Massachusetts. Near
new condition, though we confess to having read it. Taken from a review in
the South Shore Mirror: This "never before told" story will
fascinate young and old readers alike. It includes all there is to be said
about Hull and Nantasket from the 1890's to the present. This takes in the
"Big Hotel" era, Paragon Park as the East Coast's miniature world's
fair, and famous personalities from every walk of life." We loved it.

MR. ANDREWS' SCHOOL 1837-1842 Ellen Swartzlander This is a First Edition
Copyright 1958 by the Bucks County Historical Society. It is in new
condition. The Preface says, in part: The Journal of the Reverend
Silas Andrews' Select Grammar School is from the archives of the Bucks Co.
Historical Society. The original spelling, capitalization and
abbreviations have been retained. Editorial interpolations are placed in
brackets. As a teacher I am convinced that this contemporary record of a
small private school if its period is of value. As a life-long resident of
the neighborhood that once resounded with the "vociferations" of Mr.
Andrews' boys, I have a deep affection for the Journal and the old Doylestown
revealed in its pages. E.S. at Doylestown, October 25,
1957. Our note: as North Carolinians we liked the
picture of the original broadside that advertised the "famous Siamese Twins
(that) are now exhibiting at the Temperance House" as Chang and Eng lived
out from Mt. Airy, just up the road a piece from here. This is a
delightful book, we kind of hate to see it go, but are trying to convince
ourselves that we can't keep everything. A marvelous look back at a more
innocent time.
A Scholastic book with a copyright date of 1953, this is printed in 1962, during
the centennial of the War Between the States. It tells, of course, of the
Great Locomotive Chase and is nicely illustrated. A bit worn but intact,
and the best version of the story we have seen yet. Want to introduce a
youngster to Civil War history? We'll add a piece of rail road scrip
issued by the owners of these famous locomotives. email for
details.
About 32 pages of this booklet for the Pilgrim Tercentary Pageant 1921.
The last page pictures the Pilgrim Half Dollar and suggests that you purchase
one of these Memorial half dollars. There is a good description of the
coin ending with the fact that they cost $1.00 each, the balance to "be
turned over to the Commission for its use in connection with the
celebration". This is the only example we have owned in nearly fifty
years of collecting coins, medals, and collateral material. We also have a
medal with the original ribbon - if interested, please inquire. HOLD
A privately bound and distributed copy of an Encyclical Letter of Pope Leo XII
THE CONDITION OF LABOR. This was sent in November of 1929, by Bishop
William J. Hafer, of Raleigh, NC. We assume it was a plea for the working
people of the state of North Carolina, considering the economic situation of
that time. The back has a crease but does not seem in imminent danger of
separating; the boards are hard, the binding tight. make offer
This book was done in 1995, as a memorial to the author of the original thirty
seven profiles of Quakers previously published in the Bloomington Friends
Letter between 1990 and 1993, and contains a thirty-eighth profile of the
author of those. This was a book project planned by Jewell (Judy) Conrad
Edgerton before her unexpected death following open heart surgery. Her
husband, William Edgerton, edited it, as a memorial to her. Inscribed by
him, on the frontis, the book is in near new condition. $9 plus postage.

Belk A Century of Retail Leadership by Howard E. Covington, Jr. UNC Press
1988. 298 pp. Near new condition. If you grew up in the South,
this book needs no explanation. Be that as it may, we copy a paragraph
from the dust jacket: "(no enterprise) has shaped the retail economy
of the Carolinas and the Southeast as has the Belk network of department
stores. From the day in 1888 when William Henry Belk advertised cash sales
and low prices to the opening, in the 1980's, of world-class stores that match
New York's best, the Belk stores have served the people of this region, never
losing sight of the fundamental commitment that Belk and his partners made to
their communities." Written for the centennial of the company, this
book has wonderful illustrations, from the cover and on through, of the old days
up to present. We were delighted with it. SOLD
