A young girl in an elaborate dress; love those high top shoes! Draper at
right hand colored in red. The back tells that this CDV was made at R. L.
Rasbury's Temple of Art, Broad Street, Rome, Ga. Most likely a scarce
item.
Here is a nice CDV of a baby (not identified). The back tells us that this
"Photo by Prentice & Vail, Marion. O.". The building picture
is actually engraved. And what a building! Advertisement on the side
of the building for the business; people in vintage clothing on sidewalk; horses
drawing buggy on street by lamp post. Very nice. $4
A
lovely lady wearing all of her finery. See the elaborate advertising back
on this CDV by Horn's Gallery of Photographic Art (Humes Stand), Lima, O. $3
A
nice CDV from a scarce location. In all these years, this is the first we
have had by this photographer: J.N. Strickmaker, Photographer, New
Philadelphia, Ohio $3
On the back of this CDV of a woman someone has written in pencil "Countess
Mornay". There is no maker's imprint on the back; it is
plain except for the pencil writing.
Here is a lady from an old Georgia family, pictured by a Covington, Ga.
photographer, J.W. Crawford.
R.L. Rasbury's Temple of Art, Broad Street, Rome, Ga., is the maker of this CDV
picturing an old Georgia fellow. A scarce photographer, scarce location.
This dignified looking, older woman, was pictured by Dill & Maier, an
Atlanta photographer. According to the back they were located on
"Whitehall Street, Over Holbrook's Hat Store." We don't remember
having anything from this photographer before.
A CDV picturing a young man who is not identified. Lovely advertising back
tells us the photographer was M. E. Click, of Columbia City, Ind., and that he
had "Rooms Over Hunter's Store; Special attention given to Copying and
Enlarging; Negatives Preserved".
This CDV was made by a photographer named H.S. Bigelow. He was, according
to this nice back, located on Front St., in Dowagiac, Mich. The lovely
butterfly on a stalk is quite something. Very nice condition.
Here is a CDV which pictures a youngster who looks a little uncomfortable on
this chair - we bet it had a horsehair cover, which was prickly; we know as
Grandma had one. The back
shows it was made by "Joe. H. Scibird, Photographer, 107 & 109
Jefferson Street, North Court House, Bloomington, Ill." It goes on to
describe the services offered: Old pictures of any kind copied and
enlarged to any size, and colored in Ink, Oil, or Water."
Here is a handsome fellow, with a fine head of hair. Not identified as to
who is pictured. But we do know, from the back, that this CDV was made by
M.E. Click, PHOTOGRAPHER, Columbia City, Ind." with "Rooms over
Hunter's Store. Special attention given to Copying and
Enlarging". Nice condition. Great camera pictured here as well
as the materials of the trade, palette, portrait, etc.
Pictured in this CDV is a nicely dressed woman on an elaborate chair, who
appears to be wearing a chatelaine. The back tells us that this was done
by J. Haldt, S.E. Corner of Eighth and Arch Sts. Philadelphia. There is a
description of his "Crayon Photographs, Being pictures finished by first
class artists in India Ink, first on the negative, and finally upon the face of
the picture, making the Photograph actually a fine Miniature....etc."
Ends with the statement "I have no competitor in the country. Compare
with others.". Never hurts to have a high opinion of oneself, we
suppose.
A CDV of a rather distinguished looking gentleman. The back tells us that
this Carte-de-Visite was made by A.B. Hamor, Excelsior Block, Market Street,
Salisbury, Mass.
This fine looking youngster's CDV was made by "Hartsock & Co.
Photographers, Foust's Block, Columbia City, Ind.". The clothing
suggests that this young man came from a pretty prosperous family.
This is a wonderful tin type photo of two men in dresses and ladies' hats!
We wish we could reproduce it better here but have tried scanning, tried color
copies, nothing helps to lighten it. Small area of pesting at bottom, does
not interfere with overall good condition clear image. No maker's name.
Unusual, to say the least. ebay 2/15
We can't decide which is better, the one scan on the left of the original
tintype or the xerox copy on the right - in any case, this is one tin type of a
barnyard, with man on horseback, a standing boy, three dogs with log cabin in
background, wood house to right; on the building is a sign which reads
Prophitt's Liver Medicine shown in reverse as the negative was obviously printed
backwards. Very clear image, just will not reproduce here.
The person pictured is not identified. The back tells us that the
photographer was Edward Bertrand, Cresco, Iowa. The green spot seen is ink
radiation, the back is cream colored and shades of gray and white. We have
not ever had a CDV from this area.
A CDV taken by C.E. Smith. He was a Portrait and View Artist, with a
studio in the White Block, in Bristol, Vermont. We don't believe we have
had anything by this photographer before. $4
A CDV of a woman with what appears to be twins. Holding those twin babies
on her lap, looks like a boy and a girl, is a woman who appears to be too
old for their mother, and may be a black woman, perhaps the nanny? The
photographer was P.S. Weaver, on Abbotstown St., "One door North of Dr.
Ruth's Rooms." In Hanover, York Co., Pa. Pretty advertising
back. $6
A CDV of a well dressed, prosperous looking gentleman. This picture was taken by Leonard's Gallery,
189 Kansas Avenue, Topeka, Kansas. $4
We found the back of this CDV to be most interesting. It tells that it was
produced by Portrait & Landscape Photographer J. Raine and further tells
that this person was "Inventor of the Universal Panoramic Camera" and
he has a Large Series of Views in the District of Various Sizes. Richmond,
Yorkshire. If interested, please inquire. Our email is at the end of
this page.
This CDV of an attractive woman, who was most likely well-to-do (note jewelry
and dress), was made by a Wisconsin photographer. There is a date of 1888
and then W.K. Hosken, Photographer, Columbus, Wis. below that. This is
early for Wisconsin, we believe. $3 plus postage
Samuel Arnold and Janette Lyons Arnold - This Civil War CDV identifies the
couple on the front and goes on to say they were the Parents of: Edd,
Frank, Geo., Louise, Sarah, Cora. We say it is a Civil War Carte de Visite
because of the revenue stamp affixed to the back. Hold
This CDV shows a young woman, nicely dressed, who is seated on an elaborate
Victorian chair and leans on an ornate Victorian table with marble top.
The back advertises "Crayon Photographs, Being Pictures finished by
first-class artists in India Ink" and it goes on from there. If you
cannot read it we will email it to you. We like the claim "free from
freckles, blotches, &c. I have no competitor in the
country". J. Haldt, S.E. Corner of Eight and Arch St.,
Philadelphia. Negatives never destroyed; Discounts on Duplicates.
A CDV of a rather hefty young woman, looking very serious. Quite a
Victorian setting. It is, however, the marvelous advertising back that
captured our fancy on this one.
Title: Good Night. Large dog on chair, looks sleepy, as it guards
the sleeping baby. Pitcher and basin in foreground makes one think baby
has just had a bath. Photographer, J.Ward & Son, Publishers, 125
Washington St., Boston Mass.
A CDV of a pretty spiffy looking fellow. Ornate back tells about A & G
Taylor, Photographers to Her Majesty The Queen of England and their Royal
Highnesses the Prince & Princess of Wales. Miniature & Portrait
Painters at 814 Arch Street Philadelphia....goes on to name all the other
cities, in the world, where they have a studio. Cartes enlarged to life
